The grouped atrophy of muscle fibers demonstrated here with ATPase stain at pH 9.4 has resulted from Werdnig-Hoffman disease, a rare autosomal recessive condition in which there is severe loss of lower motor neurons during infancy. These "floppy infants" generally die from respiratory failure in a few months.
