Diagnosis of Legionella pneumophila

Growth on BCYE media with gray-white colonies. Though there are more than 40 species of Legionella, L. pneumophila is the major pathogen. L. pneumophila is a fastidious, nonsporeforming, aerobic, gram-negative, slender rod. It can be grown on selective BCYE media and confirmed with immunofluorescent staining.

Direct fluorescent antibody (DFA) testing with fluoresceinated antibody specific for Legionella can be directly performed on sputum samples
