CASE 1: Normal benign reactive lymph node

The diagnosis is normal reactive lymph node. The presence of a prominent germinal center indicates that this node is reacting to antigenic stimulation. Antigen presenting cells such as dendritic cells and macrophages interact with T cells and B cells to form immune responses. Refer back to this image of a normal node when looking at other cases and note the differences.

A diagrammatic representation of the normal nodal architecture is shown below:

  • A - Afferent lymphatic channels

  • B - Subcapsular sinus

  • C - Follicle

  • D - Sinuses

  • E - Paracortical region

  • F - Medullary cords

  • G - Efferent lymphatic channel
