This is a clear cell carcinoma of the cervix in a young woman whose mother was given diethylstilbesterol (DES) during pregnancy. Red, granular foci on the vaginal mucosa called "adenosis" may precede clear cell carcinoma. These cancers are rare, even in women with this history. DES exposure increases the risk for clear cell carcinoma arising in upper vagina and cervix of adolescents and young adults.
