Retinal detachment can often be a sudden event, and the patient has the loss of visual field in one eye like a windowshade was pulled down. Traction on the retina may occur with diabetic retinopathy, predisposing to detachment. Ocular trauma is another risk. Retinal detachment is an emergency, and a procedure to re-attach the retina should be done as soon as possible to try and preserve vision.
