Parvovirus infection is indicated by the reddish-pink intranuclear inclusion seen in a fetal splenic erythroid precursor cell at high magnification. This can be a congenital infection. Non-immunocompromised adults are rarely affected severely by parvovirus and may just have a skin rash, but pregnant women can pass the infection to the fetus, where a severe anemia leading to heart failure and fetal hydrops can ensue.
