This MRI of the spine demonstrates herniation of the nucleus pulposis of the intervertebral disc between L5 and S1 with compression of the lumbar spinal cord. Such a herniated disc can compress spinal nerve roots to produce pain and/or motor weakness. In the transverse view below, the herniation is seen to compress the nerve roots on the left.
