One-week course as part of the Food Safety & Security Summer Courses (Sunday – Thursday) The course will be taught by Dr. Ram Fishman (Dept. of Public Policy, Tel Aviv University) and Dr. Aliza Inbal (Hartog School of Government and Policy, Tel Aviv University) 2 credits This course introduces students to the main concepts, issues organizations and debates in the field of food security policy and economics. This course is designed to meet the needs of students in the fields of life sciences, social sciences, public health and environmental studies. A final seminar paper will be submitted at the end of the course. Each class will consist of 2-3 sessions. Dr. Inbal will teach the first session. This will be followed by a guest lecture (except on Sunday). Dr. Fishman will teach the third session. Course Schedule: Sunday Session 1 (Dr. Inbal): Introduction to International Development Policy, Introduction to Food Security Policy Session 2 (Dr. Fishman): The Economics of Food and the Global Food Challenge Monday Session 1 (Dr. Inbal): Smallholder Farmer and Rural Poverty Session 2: Guest speaker: Paul Skoczylas, Deputy Director, World Food Program, West Bank and Gaza Session 3 (Dr. Fishman): Why are smallholder farmers in developing countries producing low yields? Tuesday: Workshop on Israel, Food Security and the Developing World. Note: Attendance is Mandatory. Students are expected to take active part in discussions. The workshop will be held from 13:30 - 17:30 instead of the usual hours. Wednesday: Session 1 (Dr. Inbal): Policies for Better Nutrition Session 2: Guest Speaker: June Kunugi, Director, UNICEF, West Bank and Gaza Session 3 (Dr. Fishman): Agriculture-Nutrition Linkages in Developing Countries Thursday: Session 1 Guest speaker: Michal Bruck, humanitarian aid professional. Session 2: (Dr. Inbal): Issues in Food Security Policy, Food Aid Session 3 (Dr. Fishman): Food Production, the Global Environment and Climate Change
