Mediterranean Algae

The marine algal flora along the Mediterranean coast of Israel is composed of original eastern Mediterranean species as well as immigrants from the Red Sea. The benthic plant communities are mostly dominated by the original Mediterranean species, but a few of the immigrants, such as Caulerpa scalpelliformis (R. Brown ex Turner) C. Agardh, became established in communities of their own.

Among the conspicous algae along the Mediterranean coast of Israel one can find:

Acanthophora nayadiformis (Delile) Papenfuss

Botryocladia botryoides (Wulfen) J. Feldmann

Corallina elongata Ellis et Solander

Hypnea musciformis (Wulfen) Lamouroux
