סילבוס בצל בית חרב: יהודי ירושלים וסביבתם בתקופות הצלבנית והממלוכית

השיעור יציג את תולדות הקהילה היהודית בירושלים בימי הביניים, בתקופות הצלבנית והממלוכית, תוך התבססות על ספרות מסעות, תעודות גניזה וחומרים ארכיוניים אירופאיים, על מנת לשרטט קווים שיאפשרו לשחזר תולדותיה של קהילה יהודית במזרח, שחיה במוקד העניין הציבורי היהודי, ומנהלת את חייה בצל הנצרות האירופית בתקופה הצלבנית והרוב המוסלמי בתקופה הממלוכית. במהלך הקורס יבחנו מהלכים חברתיים, תרבותיים, וגיאוגרפיים, קשרי הקהילה עם קהילות האם במזרח אירופה, ומעמדה בקרב אוכלוסיות דומות בארץ ישראל ובירושלים.

The Jewish Community in Jerusalem in the Middle ages (12th – 15th Centuries)

The course will deal with the history of an Eastern urban Jewish community from the period of the Crusades to the end of the Mameluk period (1099-1517). In order to reconstruct a reliable picture of the community we will use different kinds of sources: Geniza documents, chronicles, archival sources and travel literature. During the semester we will follow the life of a ‘mixed’ marginal Jewish community, which managed to combine western and eastern elements. Due to its unique religious status this community stays in the focus of the public Jewish interest and conducts its life between the Christian rulers and the Moslem majority in the Crusade time and as a tiny minority in the shadow of the Moslem majority, in the Mamluk period.
