| This is a course offered on a voluntary basis to students with a strong interest in the syntax-semantics interface, and with some knowledge of syntax and semantics. Candidates should have taken Advanced Syntax, Fundamentals of formal semantics, and Advanced Semantics (or should have acquired an equivalent background in some other way).
The course is not planned as (just) a series of lectures by the instructor, but will also include lectures by the students (at least one by each student). It will be based on readings of articles, announced at least one week in advance. Whenever possible, they will be sent electronically to the participants, or put on the course site and available for downloading. All participants are expected to read the assigned articles carefully. One person (the instructor or a student) will present what (s)he considers to be the crucial or important points in the article, expressing critical comments, where appropriate, but each session will have the character of a general discussion, with each participant welcome to express personal views. Much like last year, we will hold a first meeting (time announced in advance) at which all those interested should be present, in order to agree on the time that best suits everybody, and to get a general idea of what topics would be of greatest interest to participants. I plan to discuss articles dealing with (i) the general organization or grammar (at least one or two recent articles by Chomsky on Minimalism, and the opposing view expressed by P. Jacobson in 'The (dis)organization of grammar: 25 years'), (ii) ellipsis, including antecedent-contained ellipsis, and (iii) aspects of 'reconstruction'. This can be increased or modified, in accordance with the interests of the participants. For grading, the students will be able to choose between being evaluated only on the basis of their class presentation(s), or also on the basis of writing a paper. | |
