| This course introduces the basic notions of traditional generative morphology (starting with Aronoff 1976), and the type of questions that were addressed when the domain of morphology was the study of overt word structure (i.e. phonemes and morphemes).
We’ll look at the types of morphological process/relations languages employ, and clarify the notions of ‘process’ and ‘relation’ with respect to the function/structure of the lexicon. We’ll also introduce traditional issues such as productivity and inflection vs. derivation, and touch on morphology in language acquisition and historical change. Of course, we will study morphology through data from different languages, but I believe Semitic languages will get a special attention.
