| במוקד הסמינר הטענה כי זהותו העצמית של האדם משתנה עם הזמן. האדם עצמו ולא רק ההקשר החברתי שלו יסתברו כהבניה תרבותית. נעסוק ב"קריאה קרובה" של טקסטים מפרי עטם של חוקרים המלבנים את "משחקי הזהות" בתקופות היסטוריות שונות. נפתח מסוף – העצמי הליברלי, הקומוניסטי והנאצי ושורשיהם ברומנטיקה. נראה כיצד בחטין (בעבודתו על דוסטוייבסקי) וגינזבורג (בעבודה על טולסטוי) תופסים את האדם המודרני. אחר-כך נעסוק בשרשי העצמי המודרני בתקופת ההשכלה (ה"וידויים" של רוסו), בפורטניזם וברנסנס (התזה של בורקהרד אודות עליית האינדיוידואליזם ברנסנס). לבסוף נעסוק בהמצאת ה"חוויה האישית" וה"זמן הפרטי" המיוחסת לאוגוסטין, ובהצגה העצמית של הכופר המתוודה בבית דין אינקוזיטורי. הסמינר ינסה לבחון מה הוא הבסיס לדו-שיח שהתפתח בין ההיסטוריונים, האנתרופולוגים וחוקרי הספרות בשני העשורים האחרונים.
