| מחקר בשאלות של צדקה הינו תחום היסטורי פורח בעשורים האחרונים. צדקה איננה רק ענין של מתן תרומות ממניעים דתיים או נדבניים לשמם וחקר הנושא מזמן התפתח מעבר להגדרה זו, ומעבר לרעיון ש-"צדקה תציל ממוות" או מתן "אפילו חצי תמר" כמספיק כדי לזכות בתמורה למעשה צדקה. חקר מעשי צדקה הוא כלי חשוב בכתיבת היסטוריה חברתית, כלכלית, תרבותית, פוליטית ואיטלקטואלית. בסמינר נקרא טקסטים מרכזיים שהגדירו צדקה ועיצבו תפיסות מרכזיות של התופעה, בתקופות שונות ובתרבויות שונות. בעוד שמקורו של הסמינר בחקר צדקה במסגרות מזרח-תיכוניות ומוסלמיות, הוא יתמקד גם בעבודות מרכזיות בחקר הצדקה בארצות הברית, אירופה, אפריקה, רוסיה ואזורים אחרים. מטרת הסמינר היא לזהות את הדרכים השונות בהן שמשה הצדקה אמצעי לשליטה וארגון חברתי, להקניית סמכות ומעמד חברתי, להגנה על רכוש, ולביטוי אמונה ואדיקות.
הסמינר פתוח לכל תלמידי בה"ס להיסטוריה, באישור ראש המגמה המתאים. הוא פתוח גם לתלמידי מ.א. הלומדים בתכנית לתלמידי חו"ל, ולכן ינתן בשפה האנגלית. עבודות תכתבנה בעברית או באנגלית. The study of charity has become a flourishing field of historical enquiry during the past few decades. Charity is not merely a matter of giving based on religious or altruistic motives, and research in the field has evolved to reflect the complexity of the topic. It is no longer solely a question of the power of charity "to preserve from death" or the sufficiency of giving "even a single date" to gain consideration for charitable acts. Investigation of charitable giving has become an important tool in the writing of social, economic, cultural, political and intellectual history . In this seminar we will read focal texts which have defined charity and the main understandings of the phenomenon, in different periods and cultures. While the seminar originates in the study of charity in Middle Eastern and Muslim contexts, it will also focus on central works in the study of charity from American, European, African, Russian and other contexts. The purpose of the seminar is to identify the variety of ways in which charity has served as a means of social control and human organization, a tool to establish and maintain authority and social status, to protect property, as well as to express faith and religiosity. The seminar is open to all students in the School of History, with the approval of the head of the relevant course program. It is also open to students in the overseas M.A. program, and for this reason will be taught in English. Papers may be submitted in Hebrew or English.
