| The course will survey parameters proposed for UG in the framework of the Principles-and-Parameters theory based on which patterns of syntactic variation observed across languages can be accounted for. The central goal of the course is to introduce a range of empirical phenomena with respect to which languages may systematically differ, and evaluate the relevant parameters proposed to specify the kinds and extent of variation found. General hypotheses regarding the nature and domain of possible parameters within UG and their relation to the lexicon will also be considered. Some of the phenomena to be discussed are: "configurationality" (or polysynthesis), null subjects/null objects, "long-distance anaphors", typology of Wh-interrogatives, V-movements, determiners and N-to-D movement. |
