0627.2198  The structure of German מבנה השפה הגרמנית
Prof. Alexander Grosu פרופ' אלכסנדר גרוסובחירה
We will consider in some detail selected aspects of the phonology, morphology and syntax of Modern Standard German, paying special attention to those properties that distinguish it from Hebrew and English, and which define the status of German within a general typology of languages.

Reading materials. There are unfortunately no suitable reading materials in English or Hebrew in our library. Excellent descriptions of German are certainly available, but they are written in German. We will thus have to rely entirely on handouts in the first part of the course, and regular attendance is thus indispensable (at least, for those students who cannot read books in German). Later in the course, we will attempt to read excerpts from articles and books that approach German grammar from a more theoretical perspective.

Language of instruction: English. However, students may ask questions and write papers in either English or Hebrew.

Prior knowledge of German is not required, but familiarity with the language will obviously constitute an advantage.
