This session will introduce a critical assessment of the nature and impact of major Mediterranean historical theses in the twentieth century. It will concentrate on major Mediterranean thinkers, notably: Henri Pirenne's "Mohammed and Charlemagne" - the advent of Islam, the cutting of ancient Mediterranean networks and the birth of the new European focus; Shlomo Dov Goitein and the Medieval Jewish and Moslem "Mediterranean Society"; Fernand Braudel's seminal "La Mediterranean" - with its emphasis on a new dimension of the problem of change and continuity (la longue duree) and Mediterranean networks and civilizations. |
