Do academics really need to write books?

I had a note for this, but I guess that no matter how much I try to keep track of where I keep my notes at least some of them succeed in hiding from me when I most need them. So, an interesting, and to my mind also significant, example of the return to orality didn't get included in a column that definitely would have benefitted from its inclusion.
