Better living through technology.

On the face of it, there's no reason to assume that computers can't provide us with richer and better lives. Of course just what richer and better mean are open to debate, but the basic idea that technologies can't buy happiness seems highly debatable. We may have been happier long ago sleeping under the stars, and perhaps electricity has denied us the opportunity to do that, but today's mattresses have certainly helped to alleviate backache which undoubtedly plagued people throughout the centuries. I can think of many people (including, sometimes, my own children) for whom more and more television channels mean more and more happiness. The fact that I personally don't feel that unlimited choice of television channels significantly contributes to satisfaction in my life doesn't mean that it can't. In and of themselves, technologies don't hinder our happiness.
