They're not the same thing.

An internet search conducted with the aid of a search engine is very different than an open-ended internet surf. Even if we're not looking for something very specific, a search is defined by its purpose - we want to find information on a particular subject, and we evaluate the search in relation to whether or not we found something that corresponds to what we were looking for. A surf, on the other hand, doesn't have a pre-determined goal or destination. We derive pleasure from a good surf at each interesting stop along the way, but primarily we do so when we stand outside of the surf and review how we got from individual page to individual page in what seemed to be a logical manner, even though there hardly seems to be any connection between our starting and our ending points.
