Farewell to a friend.

Readers of these columns will know (though I admit that it's hard to think that this fact has any real significance for them) that although this column is dated July, 2003, it was actually posted substantially later. However, not only was it posted later. Since it was posted quite a bit before an announcement of its posting was sent out to potential readers, I allowed myself to make changes in it after it had aleady been posted.

On October 5, 2003 Neil Postman, one of the most thought provoking critics of modern culture, died. Anyone who tries to deal with issues related to media and to technology must, sooner or later, confront Postman. I admit that I frequently found myself in disagreement with his conclusions, but as I stroll down the media and technology trails that over the years I've encountered, I inevitably find Postman's footsteps ahead of me on the path. It's strange to me that the first reference I made to him in the Boidem turned out to be written, without my knowing it at the time, the week that he died.
