A hard act to swallow.

The Urban Legends Reference Pages accept the Claire Swire saga as real, meaning that there really are a Claire Swire and a Bradley Chait, and that both worked where they were reported to have worked. The Register, an online publication that first broke the story, also accepted that it was dealing with real people, but seems to have become convinced that the story as reported was one lengthy leg-pull.

Of course it doesn't really matter. We can be afraid of something happening "again", even if it never really happened. And the realm of urban legends is the place to check these things out. Numerous examples of rather inexplicable self-disclosure via e-mail are available at snopes.com. Some are reported as true, others false and still others undetermined. It would seem to me that if PPMT is caused, even in part, by the ever-circulating stories about Claire Swire and others like her, most people can parlay their fears. It would make more sense to simply stop worrying and learn to use e-mail properly.
