Who was that masked man?

A year ago I spent a bit of space examining signature files, and especially the decline in their popularity and use. When I wrote about these they were already on the decline, and today, a year later, I only occasionally see signature files, and even more rarely those that are actually interesting. But I've also had time to reconsider my take on them. Back then I reflected on how these files might freeze their makers in a particular persona, though I guessed that most of the people who used them chose to identify with them, and not only be identified by them, for lenghty periods of time. Today I think I see them a bit differently - we're always changing, thus either we change our signature file all the time (some people do/did this) or simply give up and not have one at all.
