The impossibility of poetry?


In 1949 the well known critic Theodore Adorno commented:
to write poetry after Auschwitz is barbaric.
But of course poetry continued to be written; people continued to use the language that was used to administer mass destruction to tell about their lives, both the banal and the exalted. Perhaps we can understand Adorno only metaphorically.
