It just may be a case of not seeing the trees for the forest. I can bring in friends to verify that this is really me writing, and that the persona that I project is quite close to the one I can usually be found wearing in RL. But how do I know that that's true about you?

One well-known case of faked-identity seemed rather obviously to be a hoax from the beginning. Perhaps that's why it was so short-lived. Another case may not have been a hoax at all, but simply a good example of how inaccurate information can spread via the internet.

Only a few years ago probably inaccurate but still totally believable statistics told us that more than half of the people who identified themselves as women when online were actually men (and probably most of them frat boys). For that matter, how many under-18-year-olds click that they're over 18 before entering sex sites?
