I'll even be disappointed if it doesn't arrive.

Again and again, even when I've learned that perhaps 25, and perhaps even more, people read these columns, I've noted that I know personally all eight of my readers. Since those eight are intelligent and erudite, and seem always to have enlightening comments that often make me feel embarrassed that I've labored long and hard to ultimately write what is often obvious, who can complain. It's an honor to find interesting comments and suggestions arriving from them in my inbox. One of my readers, for instance, will most probably respond to this column that I haven't really read Montaigne until I've read him in the original French. He'll tell me that reading the original will be a pleasurable, perhaps even edifying, experience. I'm sure he's right, though that doesn't mean that I'll be able to do anything about it. I'll have to make do with the English translation, and with the expectation that that pleasant e-message will arrive.
