It's all, of course, a metaphor for the internet.

Hubble and the existence of other galactic systems tells us something about the vastness of the information available to us. California's first freeway tells us something about how quickly we're now able to navigate ourselves around that vastness. And Clive Barnes? Well, I guess that has to do with the lowest common denominator that we gravitate toward. Here we are in all this vastness, with the ability to move around within it at lightning speed, and what do we do? We shop.
