So you checked. So what?

A Google search returns 9,200,000 references to the word religion. A similar AltaVista search returns 7,200,000 references. Though statistically that's a very significant difference, considering that I have absolutely no intention of actually checking out even the first 200 that would show up on a search like that, operationally it don't mean a thing. Searches within those results for pages that also refer to internet return 1,520,000 (Google) and 600,686 (AltaVista).

Of course other than for the purpose of being able to make a note of the number of pages that show up, there's no worth whatsoever in such a search. A categorized search in Yahoo or the Open Directory Project makes much more sense. Here the returns are more or less down to size, and more important, it's easy to weed out what I'm not looking for (which apparently is what many others do want to find. But that only makes the basic problem stand out all the more: what, after all, am I looking for?
