Better safe than sorry?

Numerous web sites report on various virux hoaxes, and checking these out is a rather simple procedure. Actually, though I have a number of these sites bookmarked, I find that it's easier to simply copy the name of the would-be virus, or a line from the text of the warning, and paste it into a Google search. Almost invariably a page describing the warning as a hoax is among the first results.

The text of one of my favorites of these hoaxes reads something along the lines of:
I'd rather receive 35 copies of this letter than actually be infected with a virus.
I suppose that, considering the harm a virus can cause, I would too, but protecting oneself from viruses isn't really that difficult a procedure, and getting 35 copies of a letter like that can seem almost as bad as the virus itself.
