It's not exactly like coming over on the Mayflower, but ...

My grandmother was an active member of the Emma Lazarus clubs. I often heard the story that she was chosen, again and again, to be the secretary of her chapter because she wrote the best minutes of the proceedings. I have no reason to doubt that that's true.

Still, I admit that I frequently wondered about the name of the organization. The Emma Lazarus clubs were clearly a left wing group, probably a front of the Communist Party. Not that I feel bothered or disturbed by that, but why the name "Emma Lazarus"? Yes, the poem she wrote (almost the only one known by her) clearly expressed a sense of social justice that was fitting with the objectives of the organization, but Emma Lazarus herself was probably light years away from the members of her namesake organization both in her social status and her political opinions. It always seemed to me that someone else might have been able to contribute her name in a more fitting manner.

Still, my grandmother's connection makes me in some way a member of the family.
