Seeing really does make a difference.

This month's date tie-in dates back to 1960, the date of the first televised debate between United States presidential candidates. On this date the first of the famous Kennedy-Nixon debates was held. These debates became famous not for what was said in them, but for the fact that the impression that each candidate communicated was apparently a determining factor in the elections. Thus these debates were a watershed event in the evolution of our culture into a television culture. In polls taken after the debate those who watched the debate were convinced that Kennedy had won, while those who only heard it on the radio gave the advantage to Nixon. Kennedy, of course, won the election, and since then (at least) election campaigns focus more on images than on issues. Sort of like in that realm of our existence usually referred to as real life.
