The Nobel Prize winning economist, Milton Friedman, wrote a book in the 1980's entitled There's No Such Thing As A Free Lunch, and in so doing apparently coined a phrase that became an instant "wise saying". I'm not sure Friedman actually coined the phrase, but I haven't been able to find anyone else who lays claim to it, though of course I didn't individually check out the over 3700 web pages that apparently quote it. I'm not a fan of Friedman's economic policies (and his economic theorizing for which he received the Nobel is simply beyond me), but you have to take your hat off to someone who can turn a phrase like that.
