Why back in the 1950s, when Science Fiction was in general frowned upon by the literari, Theodore Sturgeon created his "revelation" which over the years became known as his law:
Ninety percent of everything is crap. When called into play the law definitely suggests that there's good reason for the Long Tail being long, and also for it being easily, even justifiably, overlooked. As opposed to Joseph Epstein, however, who back in 2002 (and even quoted then by me) attempted to discourage us to write what was almost sure to be a bad book, Sturgeon wasn't being elitist in this claim. He wasn't telling us that we shouldn't write or publish something. He was only noting that all genres, even those that appeal to elitists, were heavy with material that wasn't really worth the effort.
