Yes, it was only a few months ago that I first quoted this, but it bears repeating since what we have here is an excellent example of the phrase that Marshall McLuhan is usually, though incorrectly, credited for:

we shape our tools and thereafter they shape us.
Clearly, the fact that we now have the tools for precise measurement causes us (or at least allows us) to view our lives differently than when we didn't.
