Actually, it was someone else.

Vince Lombardi was an American football legend, well known for instilling the desire to win in the players he coached. According to Wikipedia, however, though Lombardi is often credited for this classic phrase, it was first used by another coach, Henry Russell Sanders. Sanders is apparently very well respected in football circles, but pales next to Lombardi. So even though the phrase is most probably Sanders', it will probably always be associated with Lombardi.
