I still try.

I'm hardly ever without the phone (and even my not very intelligent phone of old was always in my pocket), but unless I'm expecting a message I keep my messaging apps closed and silent. I still tell people that they can try and reach me via these apps but that they should know that more often than not I'll only notice that they've tried to do so after perhaps an hour. I add that I don't mind getting a phone call which I'll (almost) always hear. But I can already feel that my resistance is being whittled away. I've agreed to be on a couple of WhatsApp groups even though I'd prefer not to. There's a certain unavoidable dynamic to having a smartphone - once you have one, you have to use it, and using it primarily means being available via the "proper", or at least prevailing, channels. Though for some people being informed of an incoming message (of one sort or another) via a beep is preferable to having to every so often check the phone to see if something important has come in, I prefer things the other way around.
