I suppose that there's a bit of logic to trying to get some work done on the morning train on the way the work, but during that ride I can read, or at least peruse, the freely distributed newspaper. Yes, I can read a more interesting (not to mention better) newspaper via the phone, but in the milieu in which I grew up a cultured person reads the newspaper (preferably in the morning) and no matter how much the world has changed in the many years since then I still see leafing through a morning newspaper as almost a duty - especially if it's put into my hands for free and I have the time. And what's more, other people who observe me reading the newspaper surely exclaim to themselves that here's a cultured person. Even if that's not true, I can't object to it happening, or to fooling myself into thinking it.
