and the battery doesn't last very long

A few years back I occasionally had longer train rides during which I'd take out my laptop to truly get some work done. I'd seen some people succeed at this (or at least succeed in giving the impression of really getting work done while on the train) and I even looked forward to being one of those people. It didn't work for me. A not very long lasting laptop battery wasn't only an excuse. I often feared the machine would go dead on me (and back then the train didn't have electric sockets). In addition, wi-fi wasn't available on the train back then, and often my inability to check something out on the web kept me from getting much, and sometimes even anything, accomplished. Ultimately, however, I simply discovered that it was easier, and more effective, to spend my time reading articles I'd printed out before the ride. And when I really intended to "work", I accomplished more by editing something with pen on paper than by opening the laptop.
