and at the last minute ...

Numerous times I've heard the alarm go off when I'm already off the train. But between the time that this column was finished and ready for posting, and the actual posting itself I rode the train home twice, and both of those times the alarm went off two minutes, or even a bit more, before I reached my station. The first time I was definitely surprised and didn't even realize that it was the alarm. The second time I wasn't surprised, but certainly pleased - it seems that somebody realized that in order for the alarm to correctly do its job it had to go off a bit before reaching the station, and that's what it's now doing. Having been quite willing to be critical, it's only fitting that I now give at least a bit of praise. And of course I'm happy that this change took place before the actual posting of this column so that the "final" word on the matter can be a positive one.
