Research?

There's still a big difference between academic research and looking up something via Google. Neither of these, however, actually get taught in schools. Most teachers know very little about actually researching a topic, and almost all pupils know how to conduct a search in Google. So what happens instead? Basically, a lesson or two gets devoted to what we still refer to as "advanced search", with the pupils not understanding why they might use what are often already outdated components of search engines, and the teachers not knowing that since they were taught (also in a short lesson) about these components the capabilities of search engines to pinpoint what someone might be searching for have improved greatly. More often than not, despite the injunction to not simply type a term into Google, for most needs that's precisely what works best.
