A sort of tag.

Like many other people, I send mail to myself. Sometimes it's a file I'm working on, sometimes snippets of ideas that I want to develop, and very often it's links to items that I may want to get back to. I've almost totally stopped bookmarking, and instead send myself links to items that I might otherwise bookmark. This permits me to also save some of the text that can give me context, and words that may help me when I run a search for that page at some later date. I've also learned that sending links via the mail to other people is a good way for me to save and tag. Each of us has a rather well-defined set of interests, so items I send to one friend are different from those I'll send to another. Over time these groupings become more and more clearly defined such that if I want to find a link to a page on a particular topic I can simply run a "to:" search in my gmail for mail sent to a particular friend. In this way passing something on actually becomes a way of saving it.
