Backing or lining, golden or silver, I really couldn't have left this out.

Then again, the silver lining seems to have a rather illustrious history, apparently being able to trace its ancestry to a poem by John Milton, Comus (lines 222-223):

`Was I deceiv'd, or did a sable cloud
turn forth her silver lining on the night?'
with some references closer to our own time (at least according to one source) from (among others) Charles Dickens and P.T. Barnum.
