Who's going to protect the cyborgs?

Numerous organizations exist today that attempt to defend laboratory animals from inhumane, and unnecessary, experimentation. Not too long ago, when the study of the capabilities of animals other than humans to feel emotional pain was still in its infancy, this was hardly considered an issue. But society in general has undergone a swift, and almost complete, change in the way it views the ways in which laboratory animals can be used. Are we already approaching a time when we'll also relate to computer simulated bots as sentient beings who can be emotionally harmed by the ways we relate to them in these simulations? Will doctors be required to show that they've treated their bots humanely?
