Glancing over our shoulder.

I suppose that this is yet another iteration on what I've called the cocktail party metaphor. Even though as we grow up we realize that we really can't be everywhere at the same time, can't have our hands in all the pies, can't always be where the action is, it seems that we can't shirk that ever-present feeling that what's really interesting is happening somewhere else, that when we met that fork in the road just perhaps we should have walked down that other path. In this sense, one of the most powerful characteristics of the internet, both for better and for worse, is that it allows us to maintain the fiction of staying forever young, with all our options still being open, and just a click away.
