Choosing a space.

It's perhaps only fitting that this column acknowledge the fact that its uploading coincides with Rosh HaShannah, the beginning of the ten days of repentance. That being the case, it bears noting that creating a space for evil is not particularly different from creating a space for chance, and chance, our sages tell us, is directly related to the possibility of free will. In Pirkei Avot, Chapter 3, Verse 19, Akiva tells us:
All is foreseen, but freedom of choice is given ().
And this perhaps suggests that even within the super-connected framework of the web, a framework that seems to make us feel more and more that we're in a closed, predetermined environment, there's still more than enough space for serendipity.
