Not necessarily informed sources know to tell ...

I should admit that at least a few times a month I hear of a news story that makes
me want to stop what I'm doing and run a quick search via various sites in order
to confirm or deny the veracity of the rumor. My sources for this sort of information
vary. Sometimes it's word of mouth - someone I see who says "have you heard
...", or perhaps a snippet of conversation that I've overheard. Sometimes
it's via the web - an unexpected headline I'll see while checking out something
else, or a passing reference that rings a bell and reminds me that I'd heard that
....
And rather frequently, while watching the evening news I'll remember that earlier
that day I'd picked up on a rumor, and I'll wonder why it is that what I'd fleetingly
heard hasn't made it to the "official" news. Perhaps it's going a bit
too far to claim that if it doesn't make it to the evening news it didn't happen,
or at least doesn't really merit attention, but many stories that in the excitement
of their first announcement seem to be of great importance become highly forgettable
when the next day's newspaper arrives.
