And the second question is ...
Not too far behind that first question, but still considerably back in the distance,
is "why don't you do a doctorate?". This question is very similar to
the first in the sense that a doctorate, like a book, suggests a socially appreciated
achievement, something that a web site doesn't. You don't get a certificate you
can frame and put on your wall for having a web site, nor an increase in pay,
or better job opportunities, because you spend your days writing to the web. On the
other hand, quite a few people are making a more than passable living through
the exposure they've acquired as they've established a respected web presence.
I'm not one of those.
