There is a difference.
Our dog doesn't make suggestions about books I might like to read. He doesn't
bring me my slippers, either, and that's not only because I don't wear slippers.
He's similar to the Amazon.com bot in the sense that he gives me his undivided
attention, though actually, what he really does is demand that undivided attention
from me. He certainly recognizes my existence when I come home - more than our
children normally do, though he recognizes me by laying on his back in the doorway
and not letting me get past him until I've scratched his stomach for at least
a few moments. If I'm sitting on the couch reading or watching television and
he decides it's time to thoroughly lick my hand or simply put his head in my lap
he also refuses to let me multitask. At times like these he makes sure that I'm
focused on him, and him alone. If, however, he could be converted into a computerized
valet, he'd most certainly attend to all my needs.
