Blaming the messenger.
I suppose there's little doubt that the internet accents the extremes. All sorts
of anti-social types seem to enjoy filming themselves for YouTube, thus permitting
us regular people with voyeuristic tendencies to comfortably sit back at home
and gape at the lows to which humanity seems to be steeping. Of course we could
also do this via television, which was once, long before the internet, the main
culprit. But today it's so much more enjoyable to blame the web.
This doesn't mean that the web, like television before it, is little more than
a mirror held up for us to get a better, non-touched-up, view of ourselves. On
the other hand, if we want to look, we can also find example upon example of behavior
we can be proud of. But we seldom want to see these on television, so why should
we want to do so via the internet?
