It was the road to ride.

I grew up knowing that the Rock Island Line was the road to ride. I had no idea why this might be so, but if the song told me it was, then that must have been the case. Of course I didn't only not know why it was the road to ride, I didn't know where it ran from, or where to. I've since learned that it ran through some fourteen States, mostly through the midwest, and actually brought together three different railroad lines. It had an impressive history throughout it's almost 130 years on the tracks ... until this day in 1980 when it finally came to a halt.

I doubt I ever would have had the opportunity to discover for myself why it was the road to ride, but such an opportunity certainly doesn't exist anymore.
